Created by Blumenthal Performing Arts, and modeled after similar programs already underway in more than 30 other cities, The Blumey Awards is designed to recognize and celebrate the best in high school musical theater and foster even greater achievements in the future. Musical productions from 32 Greater Charlotte Region high schools participated in this year’s program.
Like the Tony Awards, The Blumey Awards Ceremony will feature live performances by the six finalists for Best Musical as well as medley performances by the six finalists for Best Actor and for Best Actress. Two students from each production also will be featured in opening and closing production numbers. A professional director will direct the awards ceremony and a professional orchestra will accompany the students. Maureen O’Boyle, anchor for WBTV, is emceeing the black-tie event.
Winners will be announced live in the following categories: Best Musical, Best Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Featured Performer, Best Ensemble/Chorus, Best Student Orchestra, Best Overall Direction, Best Choreography Execution, Best Costume Creation, Best Hair and Makeup Design, Best Set Construction, Best Lighting Execution, and The Charlotte Observer Student Critic Award.
