Overview

Charlotte’s Jazz Arts Initiative’s (JAI) monthly series brings in the New Year at The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater – presenting world-renowned jazz flutist Kent Jordan paying a special tribute to the great HUBERT LAWS with Strings. The Stage Door Theater is part of Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, at the corner of 5th and College in Uptown Charlotte.

Shows take place on the third weekend of each month and feature two sets on Friday (6:00PM & 8:15PM) and Saturday (7:00PM & 9:15PM) as the Charlotte region’s most gifted musicians recreate the music of jazz masters like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Billie Holiday. The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear.

About Hubert Laws and Kent Jordan

With a career spanning over 40 years in jazz, classical and other musical genres, Hubert Laws is one of jazz’s most respected and critically acclaimed flute players. Following studies at the Juilliard School, he released The Laws of Jazz in 1964, the first of thirteen albums during his career, three of which would earn him Grammy nominations. During the 1970’s he was a member of the New York Jazz Quartet. Among the many artists he has played and recorded with are Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Nancy Wilson, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Lena Horne, Leonard Bernstein, Kathleen Battle, Jaco Pastorius, George Benson, Clark Terry and J. J. Johnson. In 2010, Laws received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Born in New Orleans, flutist Kent Jordan is the son of saxophonist Kidd Jordan and is one of seven musical siblings. He studied at the Eastman School of Music and the New Orleans' Center for the Creative Arts, being inspired at the latter by Ellis Marsalis with whom he recorded. Jordan has played and recorded with the groups Jasmine and the Improvisational Arts Quartet before recording three albums on the Columbia label. He has also recorded with Wynton Marsalis and Kevin Eubanks, among others. Dedicated to educating future jazz musicians, Jordan has served on the faculty of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp in New Orleans since its inception.
