Overview

Courtnay The poet is our featured artist for this month.

A well-rounded mover and shaker, Courtnay “Courtnay the Poet” Coan, has devoted most of her life defining herself by nurturing and expanding her God-given artistic gifts. Courtnay has used them to penetrate the hearts and minds of individuals and audiences from the Northeastern United States to the Sunny Florida peninsula.

Courtnay was born in Jacksonville, Florida and raised in Awendaw, S.C. There, she discovered her passion for the arts after performing in a play at St. James Elementary School. She continued to nurture her talents throughout her formal education from grade school to college at South Carolina State University.  She considers her mother, an entrepreneur, and her father, an educator, the most influential and inspirational people in her life.

It is often said that if you choose a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. Guided by that philosophy, Courtnay the Poet has poured her heart into poetry and art. As a result, her talents have created a successful union between her personal and professional ambitions. The creator and host of NEO SOUL SUNDAY and  THE EROTIC POETRY SHOW in Charleston (est. 2009) and Columbia (est. 2010), the Creator of Poetic Vibes Charleston and the host of Courtnay’s Corner on 99.3 The Box. Her artistic aptitudes have also provided her opportunity to open for major acts such as Trey Songz and Monica.

Embedded in Courtnay’s enthusiasm for life and art is a deep appreciation for the many strong, beautiful and intelligent African-American women who paved the way for future generations. Amongst them is Rosa Parks who said, “Each person must live their life as a model for others.

”Blumenthal Performing Arts' monthly Poetry Slams are hosted by SlamCharlotte, Charlotte’s own two time national championship team of spoken word poetry (2007 & 2008). SlamCharlotte strives to promote poetic growth, performance enhancement, and increased camaraderie among the poets and the community through the monthly slam competitions. SlamCharlotte’s current Slammaster, Bluz, is the 13th ranked individual poet in the world.
