Overview

This Month's Featured Artist: Tawny Powell

Tawny Powell is an avid hugger who laughs in the face of adversity and leaves poems under-bellied, not belying a city’s footsteps. She brings forth both raw earth and shadows in her poems. Her goal in poetry is to connect self to society in ways beyond her own individual experiences, though not ignoring those experiences, deeming them rather “life’s time stamps.” She aims to speak about broader socio-political, economic, geographic, transcultural issues, while situating the self as an individual poet, recognizing and empathizing with the plights of others, and toward a final attempt to link multitudes with common threads of experience, intellect, and emotion.

Born and raised in Worcester, MA she is now an Atlanta-based poet and former Java Monkey Slam Champion, 2013. She embraces the performance ways of Slam culture while staying true her paged roots. Her debut chapbook, Long Winters Baby, was released in December 2011 and can be found on her website:  TawnyPowell.com.

Breaking the Barge is her second self-published chapbook. Her approach to art is "staying tuned to myself and free writing always.” Her works may take a while to come ... but they're always on time.

Oh, and she likes hugs, poems, and ice cream. In that order.
