The Children of Children Keep Coming

Overview

Drawing inspiration from author Russell Goings’ “The Children of Children Keep Coming: An Epic Griotsong,” this play demonstrates the inextricable link between the past, present, and future as told through song and dance. Goings’ work, a breathtaking form of poetic expression, combines elements of Greek mythology, lessons from history, and notes from jazz music to tell the African-American story, from the beginnings in sea and slavery to the collective victory of freedom and sovereignty. This myth-poem honors our history, our heroines and heroes, our homeland, and our humanity while it informs the poetry and music of today's children who, in turn, pave the way for tomorrow's children.

West Mecklenburg High School is excited to rebuild their drama club to create this reenactment. It will feature stories of the students who attend this school as well as projected images of Romare Bearden.
