Toni Tupponce
Toni Tupponce, lead vocalist and Program Director for A Sign of the Times of the Carolinas, is a respected and sought-after stylist in the Charlotte region. She is a lyricist, writer and speaker on topics including social justice and cultural equity. Born in West Point, Virginia, she credits the congregation of her “home” church as her first audience – when she staged her own “mini-concert” on the steps of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church after Sunday service – she was four!

Toni began singing with A Sign of the Times in 2001. She’s opened for GRAMMY-winning vocalists Jane Monheit and Jennifer Holliday; she was a featured artist at Charlotte’s Ritz Carlton Hotel from 2010 – to 2013. Since 2011, Toni has performed to standing room only audiences for the Bechtler Museum of Art’s Jazz for Lovers Concerts. She’s performed for the Sun Set Jazz Festival in Frederiksted, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Southern Ireland venues.

The Charlotte Magazine named Toni “One of Charlotte’s 50 Most Interesting People” in 2004 and “The Sexiest Voice in Charlotte” in 2006. Her discography includes: Grayson Warren Brown’s Been So Busy, 1987; All About Love, 2004; Connections, Too 2003; Ascension, 2006 and Just Friends, 2007.

Tyrone Jefferson

Trombonist, composer, arranger, producer, and visionary Tyrone Jefferson makes music that chronicles his journey, opens his heart and mind, and allows him to share his worldview. Dexterous and inventive as a player and creator, his solid foundation in music theory and knack for the nuances of rhythm and melody shine through in his vibrant performances, arrangements, and compositions. With a career spanning nearly 50 years, he stands firmly behind his artistic mission: to promote the rich and diverse history of those in the African Diaspora through music, dance, and the spoken word.

Inspired by classical music, jazz, the blues, gospel, soul, R&B, hip-hop, and rap, Jefferson’s commitment to evolving his sound and studying music as a fine-tuned skill and a transcendent art form illuminates his bold resumeĢ. He has performed and recorded with musicians including James Brown, rap pioneers Public Enemy, hip-hop artist L.L. Cool J, and Gospel artist Heather Hedley. He has performed in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Europe, Japan, Morocco, and the Caribbean, as well as at prominent venues such as the Apollo and Lincoln Center (NYC) and the Greek Theater and the Staples Center (LA).

Jefferson was one of six composers commissioned by Minister of Culture, Guadeloupe, French West Indies to collaboratively write “A Hymn for World Peace” in 1984.
