Overview

Charlotte’s Jazz Arts Initiative’s (JAI) monthly series at The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater – is bringing back one of its most popular and enchanting shows from the past.  We’re wrapping up Season 8 with a special JAZZ ROOM tribute to the great gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt performed by Andy Page. The Stage Door Theater is part of Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, at the corner of 5th and College in Uptown Charlotte.

Shows take place on the third weekend of each month and feature two sets on Friday (6:00PM & 8:15PM) and Saturday (7:00PM & 9:15PM) as the Charlotte region’s most gifted musicians recreate the music of jazz masters like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Billie Holiday. The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear.

About Django Reinhardt and Andy Page

Guitarist Django Reinhardt is the father of Gypsy Jazz, a musical style he developed in the 1930’s after hearing recordings of Louis Armstrong for the first time. Reinhardt and his band, Quintette du Hot Club de France, embodied the style that connotes the creative vibrancy of pre-war Paris. “Jazz attracted me because in it I found a formal perfection and instrumental precision that I admire in classical music, but which popular music doesn’t have.” – Django Reinhardt

Andy Page is an esteemed guitarist who has been making music for 27 years. He teaches at Appalachian State University in Boone and performs regularly with Todd Wright, Swing Guitars, and his own jazz trio. He has recorded a collection of gypsy waltzes with Charlotte guitarist Scot Wise under the name “Musette Guitars”, which drew international press. The Page Brothers Gypsy Jazz Quartet (featuring Andy’s twin brother, bassist Zack Page) has performed regularly at the Blowing Rock Jazz Society and have performed a live radio broadcast from WETS in Johnson City, TN (the region’s NPR station).
