Jazz Room @ the Stage Door Theater

Overview

After much-acclaim and sold-out performances, Charlotte’s Jazz Arts Initiative’s (JAI) monthly series—The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater – is swingin’ along in Season 8 with a tribute to the legendary tenor saxophonist JOE HENDERSON performed by saxophonist David Finucane. The Stage Door Theater is part of Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, at the corner of 5th and College in Uptown Charlotte.

Shows take place on the third weekend of each month and feature two sets on Friday (6:00PM & 8:15PM) and Saturday (7:00PM & 9:15PM) as the Charlotte region’s most gifted musicians recreate the music of jazz masters like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Billie Holiday. The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear.

About Joe Henderson and David Finucane

The playing of tenor saxophonist and composer Joe Henderson was synonymous with power and grace. Although Henderson’s earliest career was influenced by a strong hard bop influence, his music had a strong unity which made his earliest recordings and compositions classics. He established himself in the early-mid sixties in the bands of Kenny Dorham and Horace Silver. Between 1963-1968 he recorded nearly 30 albums on the Blue Note label including Horace Silver’s classic Song For My Father and Herbie Hancock’s Prisoner.

Dave Finucane is co-founder and director of the Durham Jazz Workshop. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, he performs and teaches in New York and the Raleigh-Durham Triangle region. He is currently on faculty at Duke University and previously taught at UNC Chapel Hill teaching jazz improvisation and jazz saxophone. He performs extensively in the Triangle and has led and been a sideman on twelve recordings. Some artists Finucane has performed with include: John Abercrombie, Scott Sawyer, John Hart, Eric Alexander, Gil Evans and George Russell.
